Official opening of Sacred Heart Columbarium this Sunday
This Sunday, 15th November, Bishop Bill Wright will officially bless and open the newly-developed Columbarium at the Sacred Heart Cathedral - 841 Hunter St, Newcastle West.
Following extensive redevelopment over the last year by the Newcastle city parish of St Benedict, the expanded memorial garden of the Sacred Heart Columbarium creates a place of peaceful remembrance for the community.
"The Columbarium provides a space for quiet reflection, and somewhere people can come to prayerfully remember and honour their deceased family and friends," Bishop Wright said.
The Columbarium consists of an arrangement of marble memorial walls to contain the ashes of the deceased, focused around a shrine and image of the crucified yet risen Christ. It is accessible from both Parry and Hunter Streets in Newcastle West.
The walls and contents of the former Columbarium, which had been temporarily re-located to the west of the Cathedral, have now been re-sited to the centre of the new development. The new Columbarium increases the number of burial niches now available to over 1400.
